If your specialty involves fire or if you're a fan of ceramic, glass or other unique creations, stop by the Fire Arts Center and Fine Arts Foundry.  They also host classes as well as showcases and the people who work there couldn't be nicer and more accomodating.
How to get there:
From Highway 101, take the Samoa Blvd exit west until you reach G Street.  Take G Street left and the Fire Arts Center will be on your left after you pass the Arcata Marsh and Interpretive Center.

In addition to being a gallery, they also have equipment that you can use.  Call them for membership details and other information.
Other things to do in the area:
The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is across the street and offers great views of the bay and relaxing walking trails.  Redwood Curtain Brewing Company is nearby as is the Arcata Community Forest and the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area.
