A little bit off the beaten path and just a short distance from where the Mad River meets the Pacific Ocean, Mad River County Park offers great views of the coastline and plenty of space to spread out and relax.  Northwest of Arcata, it passes by the southern starting point of the Hammond Coastal Trail and offers views of the countryside before the park appears. Dune walks are amazing here.
How to get there:
Take the Giuntoli Lane exit west and then make a right on Heindon Road.  Turn left on Miller Lane and then when you come to the 'T' at Mad River Road, take it right and it will lead you to the beach.  Check out the map for more specific directions. 
More info:
Day-use only with no fee.  The boat launch is in a separate parking area and will be on the right just before the beach parking lot.
Other things to do in the area:
