Hiking the Ossagon Trail at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Video Included)

Ossagon-Trail

Located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, the Ossagon Trail has an incredible payoff that takes less than two miles to reach. This trek is popular for both the journey and the destination and should be at the top of any adventurer's list of Humboldt County trails.

This 3.6 mile out-and-back trail starts with a short incline before descending down to one of the most beautiful beaches you'll find in the area. Enjoy the old growth redwoods that line the first part of trail as you make your way. The ferns and other plants that surround the trail are green and lush, the air is fresh and the birdsong makes for a nice soundtrack on this peaceful trail.

As you move west toward the beach, the trees start to thin out as the trail begins its descent. The total elevation change is just under 800 feet so the grade is somewhat steep over a short distance but is very manageable. There are times when the trail gets tight but all the way down to the bottom, it's pretty easy to make one's way. There are some spots that get especially steep and can be muddy depending on the recent rains but shouldn't pose any real problems. Good shoes will serve you well on this trail but boots are recommended.

Once you reach the bottom, the trail moves through a beautiful meadow/marsh and toward the beach. It's a gorgeous section of the trail and a reminder of the different natural environments hikers can find on Humboldt County trails. The creek here does flood and it can become muddy and wet through this area in the winter and spring. It's also important that you take note of where you came out of the trees so your way back is easy to find after exploring Ossagon Rocks and other parts of the beach.

A Great Hike Should be Celebrated!

Hiking is going to make you hungry!  When you're looking for a locally owned restaurant to enjoy a post-hike meal, visit our    Eat & Drink Section for a comprehensive list of Humboldt County Restaurants.

The Ossagon Rocks are worth a visit and are a testament to the strength of the Northern California Coast. These giants are a unique attraction and are a great place to relax and enjoy the fruits of your efforts. A short distance beyond Ossagon Rocks, there are more big rocks and rugged coastline to explore.

Hikers can also reach this beach and Ossagon Rocks from a few different starting points; including Fern Canyon.  If you're looking for something a bit more intense on your way to the beach, the Friendship Ridge Trail / Coastal Trail is pretty amazing.

The trailhead is located right off of Newton B. Drury Parkway at mile marker 132.9. There will be a few parking spots on the side of the road.

The Hope Creek Trail can be accessed from this same parking area and its trailhead is across the street from the Ossagon Trailhead within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.
