The Blue Lake Museum is a free public museum devoted to railroading, logging and living in the Mad River Valley.  The Museum is housed in the old Arcata and Mad River Railroad Depot built in 1897 and is full of artifacts from the booming days of Redwood Country.  The museum also features the Ruth Everding Libbey collection of Native American basketry, the Korbel and Northern Redwood Lumber Company room and extensive research resources. The Railroad, the oldest on the north coast, is a Registered California State Historic Landmark.
How to get there:
Traveling on Highway 299 East, take the Blue Lake Blvd exit.  At the round-a-bout, take a right to Chartin Road and then a left on South Railroad Avenue.  The Museum will be on your left.
Traveling on Highway 299 West, take the Glendale Drive exit and turn left.  Make a left on Blue Lake Blvd and then a a right to Chartin Road and then a left on South Railroad Avenue.  The Museum will be on your left.

Other things to do in the area:
Azalea State Natural Reserve is a gorgeous place with walking trails.  The Mad River Fish Hatchery tour is also worth checking out.
