Fort Humboldt State Historic Park is situated on a bluff overlooking Humboldt Bay.  This remote military post was established in 1853 to assist in conflict resolution between Native Americans and gold-seekers and settlers who had begun flooding into the area after the discovery of gold in the northern mines.
The Fort, once home to Ulysses S. Grant, is now a museum that is dedicated to perserving and teaching the history of the fort itself as well as that of the Wiyot, Hoopa and Yurok people.
There is also a logging museum on the grounds, places for a picnic and plenty of space to walk around and reflect on the fort's historic past.
How to get there:
From Highway 101 (just south of Bayshore Mall), take Highland Avenue east and then left on Fort Avenue about a block later.
