Taking a Road Trip? 15 Things to Check Before You Leave

Avenue-of-the-Giants

There is so much freedom in one's ability to jump in the car, roll the windows down and hit the open road. Whether you have a destination in mind or want to see where each turn takes you, there is a sense of adventure to be had. However, before the fun begins, it's important to make sure you're ready to travel safely for maximum fun. Here are fifteen things to check before you leave.

While we've done our best to offer a complete list, each experience is unique. What do you do before heading out on a road trip? Let us know in the comments.

1. License, registration, insurance and emergency contact information - With any luck, you won't need any of these things while on your road trip but it's important to have them ready just in case. Taking a few minutes to get this info together can save you time and trouble if you do need them while on your adventure.

2. Clutter - Having an organized car is about more than just the peace of mind that comes with knowing where things are. Rolling debris can get caught under your vehicle's gas and brake pedals potentially causing a serious accident. In addition, during an accident, these same items become dangerous projectiles as they fly around the vehicle; possibly causing great bodily harm.

3. Battery - Even if you have roadside assistance, waiting on help is time you're not having fun. Fortunately, many shops in Humboldt County, including Leon's in Eureka, will check your battery for free.

4. Car Jack and Lug Wrench - Fortunately, some tire issues can be fixed with little effort if you have the right tools. A quality jack and lug wrench can help you get back on the road and enjoying yourself in no time.

5. Hoses and Belts - Generally speaking, dealing with a leaky hose or a bad belt is a pretty minor affair; if you have the tools handy to deal with it.  However, most people don't have the tools and those who do generally don't take them on a road trip.  Take a few minutes before your trip to check them out or potentially spend hours of waiting for someone else to.

6.  All Lights - This writer once got pulled over because one of the two little lights on each side of the back license plate was out. Having a non-working headlight, blinker or other light can be a safety issue but can also increase the chances your road trip is spoiled by getting pulled over and receiving a ticket.

7. Horn - A working horn can save you from an accident. Give it a test push to celebrate getting on the road!

8. Vehicle Fluids - Your vehicle's fluids are its lifeline and if not properly maintained can cause big issues and even bigger money. Your car will mostly likely run longer than normal on a road trip which makes it especially important to check them before getting on the road. Power steering, transmission fluid, anti-freeze and oil are important for engine care and don't forget to top off the windshield wiper fluid too.

9. Air Filter - Changing your vehicle's air filter is pretty cheap, is generally easy to do and can save you money in the long-run as a dirty air filter can lead to a fuel imbalance and other engine issues. Murphy's law means that you'll face the consequences of ignoring your air filter when you're the furthest from home but nearest the most expensive mechanic.

10. Tires - A good number of roadside issues stem from problems with the vehicle's tires. It's important to ensure that each tire, including the spare, is properly inflated and has enough tread for taking on long distances.

This won't make any road trip better

11. Brakes - For your safety as well as the safety of your passengers and other drivers, ensuring your vehicle's brakes are in good working order might be the most important safety measure you can take before getting on the road. While squeaking brakes are a good indicator that there is an issue, some issues start before brakes begin squeaking.

12. Emergency Kit - Every vehicle should carry a basic emergency kit but when on a road trip, it's especially important to make sure yours is stocked with all the items you may need. From aspirin and bandages to jumper cables and a map, most issues will be easier to deal with if you're prepared.

13. Snacks - Road Trip snacks provide energy but more importantly, the road trip itself offers an excuse to indulge in all your favorite foods. Visiting interesting places and having fun on the road is elevated with a full supply of all the goodies you love!

14. Music - Whether it's music, talk radio or your favorite podcast, what comes through your speakers sets the vibe for your trip. Get your playlist ready before you leave and set your own groove. Keep in mind, the job of car dj is often the responsibility of your passenger so wisely consider who gets that other front seat.

15. An Open Mind - Last but certainly not least, an open mind. For us at NorCalPulse, road trips are an, 'anything may happen' opportunity and some of our best memories come from experiences we may not have even considered before we left.  It's always good to have a plan but going with the flow can also create memories that will last a lifetime.
