The Headwaters Forest Reserve is 7,472 acres of public land located 6 miles southeast of Eureka. It has an incredibly beautiful trail suitable for people of all ages and is set in a relaxing environment. The reserve is set aside to protect and preserve the ecological and wildlife values in the area, particularly the stands of old-growth redwood that provide habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet and the stream systems that provide habitat for threatened coho salmon.  Since Headwaters Forest Reserve is part of a sensitive ecosystem, visitors should access this area appropriately.
How to get there:
From Highway 101 traveling in either direction (in south Eureka), take the Herrick Avenue exit east and then make a right on Elk River Road. Follow Elk River Road for about six miles. The county road terminates at the reserve boundary. A parking area for visitors is available on the edge of the reserve and a kiosk provides important information for a safe hiking experience.
More info:
Southern Section: Public access to the southern part of the Reserve is available Mid-May through Mid-November via guided hikes (Saturdays & Sundays). The trail is approximately four miles round trip and runs parallel to the old-growth forest along Salmon Creek. Call the BLM Arcata Field Office at 707-825-2300 for more details and to make reservations.  Reservations can be made for current month and following month only.
