Shelter Cove - Mal Coombs Park

Machi Road
Shelter Cove, California 95589
Southwest Humboldt

Mal Coombs Park, home of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse, is a beautiful park right on the Pacific Ocean.  The park has both tables and open grass areas for picnicking and relaxing or tossing around a frisbee.  Take the stairs to reach the ocean and find plenty of space to walk along the coastline and enjoy the peace that comes with it.
The beach isn't necessarily the kind that you'd be able to throw out a blanket and chill by the ocean.  Because of it's rocky design, it's more for adventure seeking people looking to explore the tidepools, cool formations and wildlife.

How to get there:
From Redway, travel about 31 miles on Shelter Cove Road.  As you enter the town of Shelter Cove, take a left on Machi Road and follow it down the hill.  The park will be on your left.
More info:
Once you take the stairs down to the beach, you can go left and walk almost to the Shelter Cove Boat Launch area.  Be on the lookout for wildlife as it is abundant in both the air and water.
Other things to do in the area:
There are a number of smaller parks in Shelter Cove that are all worth a visit with Seal Rock Park and Abalone Point being two of our favorites.  Plan some time to check out Black Sands Beach which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Humboldt County.
