During spawning season (January-March), a free tour of the Mad River Fish Hatchery should be on your list of local things to do.  30-minute tours are offered for a few hours in the morning so you can get up close and personal with the whole process.
During other times of the year you can take a self-guided tour of most parts of the facility.
How to get there:
From Highway 299 in either direction, take the Blue Lake Blvd exit into Blue Lake.  At the roundabout, make a right on Chartin Road and then a left on South Railroad Avenue.  A few blocks later, make a right on Hatchery Road and follow it a few miles to the Fish Hatchery.  For other ways to get there, check out the map above.
More info:
School and group tours are welcome.  Call 707-822-0592 or visit the Website for more information.
Other things to do in the area:
If it's been a while since you've gone roller skating, now's your chance.  The Blue Lake Roller Rink offers public skating which is fun for the whole family.  You'll also pass right by the Blue Lake Museum on your way to the hatchery.  Enjoy a drink or some food at neaby Mad River Brewing.
