This 19 site campground just south of Castella sits right along the Sacramento River and offers a pleasantly surprising amount of peace considering it's just off of I-5.  Each site has a picnic table, fire ring and most have plenty of shade. This campground is pretty ideal for people who like to fish and are looking to catch some prime trout. 
Spots are $15/night; no reservations needed.  There are flush toilets and water but no shower facilities.  
How to get there:
From I-5 in either direction, take the Sims Road exit and follow it down to the river; you'll run right into the campground.

The campground is the former home of an old CCC camp.  Take the time to enjoy a walk around the campground for a look at the ground's history.  There are a handful of markers that showcase the work that used to go on here.
The views of the river from the old suspension bridge are great for photos. 
Things to do in the area:
The park is located between Lakehead and Castella.  Head to Castella and enjoy Castle Crags State Park, which also offers Camping.  In Dunsmuir, take the short walk to see Hedge Creek Falls, an incredible waterfall just off the highway.  Dunsmuir City Park is a great park along the Sacramento River and the Dunsmuir Museum & Railroad Museum also makes for an interesting visit.
