Because of Butt Valley Reservoir's proximity to Lake Almanor, it is often overlooked as a destination point in the area; and that's a good thing. We love Butt Valley Reservoir and its campgrounds are some of our favorites; especially Cool Springs Campground. Both campgrounds at Butt Valley Reservoir are fantastic but our experience has led us to believe that Cool Springs is a little more chill (less people) than the Ponderosa Flat Campground but doesn't have nearly as much beach area.
This 25-site campground, typically open May-September, welcomes tents, rv's and walk-ins. There are spots right along the water and just on the other side of Prattville-Butte Reservoir Road.
The campground has vaulted toilets and piped water but no shower facilities. There is also a boat launch for those who want to bring a boat and get out on the water.
How to get there:
From Highway 36 (on the west side of Lake Almanor), take Highway 89 south. A few miles later you'll see Prattville-Butt Reservoir Road; take it to the right. Follow until you reach the Reservoir. You'll pass Ponderosa Flat Campground and a couple of miles later you'll run right into Cool Springs Campground. Take a look at the map for more specific directions.
