There are six primitive campgrounds that are on a first-come, first-served basis that are equipped with tables and fire rings. There are vault toilets available but no water so be sure to bring plenty of your own.  The campground typically opens as soon as the snow melts enough; around May.  The spots get taken pretty quickly during many times of the year so if you're going to visit, plan accordingly.
Lake info:
Located in Siskiyou County, this 50-acre lake is a true gem of Northern California.  Up the road from Lake Siskiyou and just west of Mt. Shasta, the lake is geographically in the Trinity Mountains and surrounded by a vast amount of hiking and biking opportunities, camping and other lakes.  Bring your kayak, sup or canoe; on a chill day, the water is like glass.  It's mesmerizing.
How to get there:

From I-5, take the Central Mt. Shasta Exit and go west.  Take a left at the stop (the Sisson Museum will be in front of you) and then make a right onto W.A. Barr Road where you'll go past Lake Siskiyou.  Turn onto Castle Lake Road and follow it just over 7 miles to the parking lot. Watch for signs to the lake; they are helpful.
More info:
There are no fees and a three-day maximum.  Don't leave valuables in your car.  Fishing is ok at the lake with a license.
