Mendocino Headlands State Park (which the Estuary is a part), with its unique blend of gentle trails, rugged coastline, secluded beaches and timeless history, surrounds the charming town of Mendocino on three sides.  Miles of trails wind along cliffs giving the casual explorer spectacular views of sea arches and hidden grottos. 
The Estuary itself is pretty incredible.  Running along Big River, it offers kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, fishing, hiking and more.  Of course, wildlife viewing and birding are very popular activities as is photography.
Where Big River Road stops, the Big River Trail begins and is perfect for exercising, wildlife viewing, bird watching or just getting out to enjoy the beauty of the area.  It's a very peaceful trail and is not too difficult to navigate.  The trail is just under 6 miles out and back.
How to get there:
From Highway 101, take Big River Road; it will be on the east side of the highway, just north of Big River Bridge and just south of the town of Mendocino.  Big River Road will lead you directly down to the Estuary.
