A visit to the Mendocino Headlands will provide a memorable experience while on your coastal road trip.  You might come to see the spring wildflowers, enjoy a crisp and clear fall day, escape to a cool summer climate or witness the winter migration of gray whales but whatever the reason, the park is an incredible place to visit while in the Mendocino area.
Activities within the park include; hiking, biking, surfing, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing...just to name a few.  Wildlife viewing is especially popular here as well.
Within the park, you can find the Ford House Museum, a cultural site that offers history, art, exhibits and educational programs.
Big River Beach and the Big River Estuary State Marine Conservation Area are also found within the park and should definitely be a part of your visit.
How to get there:

The Headlands more or less surround the town of Mendocino.  From Highway 1, take any exit into Mendocino and head toward the coast.  You'll be there in a couple of minutes.
More info:
For more info, visit the Park's Website.
Other things to do in the area:
If you want to visit some other beautiful beach/parks, head north to Russian Gulch State Park or Point Cabrillo State Park.  To the south, in Little River, you'll find Van Damme State Park where you can also visit some nice Art Galleries.
